Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution - Bill of Rights

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

Preservation and Proposition

Our mission is to document the pivotal Second Amendment events that occurred in Frontier Mercersburg, and its environs, and to heighten awareness of the importance of these events in the founding of our Nation.

We are dedicated to the preservation of the place where the Second Amendment was "born" and to the proposition that the Second Amendment (the "right to bear arms") is the keystone of our Liberty and the Republic.

Canadian Newsman Warns America about Gun Registration

By Michael Allen, Thu, January 09, 2014

Brian Lilley, a Canadian newsman, recently warned the United States that gun registration will lead to gun confiscation.

The Sun News host first showed a clip of President Obama speaking in 2013 about a federal gun bill that would have required universal background checks for purchases, but specifically forbids a national gun registry, which is already banned (video below).

Lilley then showed a clip of gun owners registering their guns in Connecticut under that state's law.

He claimed that Connecticut has a list of "every gun they don't like," but that would only be true if there were evidence that every resident actually registered his or her gun in 100 percent compliance. Lilley then said Connecticut could "amend" its gun control bill "slightly" and "force you to hand in your firearms or face jail time."

According to BizPacReview.com, Lilley then recalled how Canada enacted its nationwide gun registry (which is illegal in the US) and gun owners watched "time and again" how their weapons were re-classified as "prohibited."

He then recalled how Canadian gun owners had certain gun models taken away and then warned, "This is now coming to the US through Connecticut and it could spread."

However, Lilley failed to mention that the Firearm Owners' Protection Act of 1986 forbids a national gun registry, per Cornell Law School:

No such rule or regulation prescribed [by the Attorney General] after the date of the enactment of the Firearms Owners Protection Act may require that records required to be maintained under this chapter or any portion of the contents of such records, be recorded at or transferred to a facility owned, managed, or controlled by the United States or any State or any political subdivision thereof, nor that any system of registration of firearms, firearms owners, or firearms transactions or disposition be established. Nothing in this section expands or restricts the Secretary's authority to inquire into the disposition of any firearm in the course of a criminal investigation.

Lilley mentioned a low number of police deaths by gun in 2013 in the US, but failed to mention how the US still has far more gun murders than Canada, Australia, Japan and the UK, which all have much stricter gun control laws than the US, noted Business Insider.

He also failed to mention that there is no actual nationwide ban against guns in Canada, according to Canada's CBC News.

Canada has dismantled its long-gun registry, but it does take up to 60 days to buy a firearm, which includes registering, taking a gun safety course and going through background checks.

Lilley warned that gun control was about "control," but was not restricted in his Canadian broadcast.
